What are KN95 Masks?

The KN95 masks offer great protection to the wearer and they are seen as the safest product to wear against the COVID virus. KN95 respirators are the ideal mask for protection from airborne particles in the air and protects against 95% of these harmful germs. The product is known for its duck like appearance and it covers the nose, mouth and chin with a tight fit which offers good protection. Sometimes they can also be referred to as N95 masks or even FFP2 masks – these are all very slight variations in design but are essentially the same product. A KN95 mask is seen as the gold standard in protection and are commonly worn by healthcare professionals who will wear them for long shifts.

How long can you wear KN95 Masks?

The COVID situation thrust the KN95 mask into the public view at a time when it was normally only used in medical settings and as such there is no available data on the optimum time that a mask can be worn for. Certainly a KN95 mask should not be worn if it is damaged or gets ripped and therefore breaks the seal. Additionally if the mask no longer fits tightly around the face and nose it is offering less protection. The timeframe which seems to be quoted the most is about 8-12 hours of continued usage in normal conditions. 

Can I reuse KN95 Masks?

 Again, this question does not have a universal answer as it depends on the circumstances and setting that the masks are being worn. If it is in an office setting with good ventilation and very few interactions with other people the CDC notes that KN95 masks can be reused up to 5 times. If on the other hand the respirator is being used in a very active environment such as a factory or warehouse with little ventilation and close contact with many individuals then it stands to reason that the mask will need to be replaced earlier. What is vitally important is that the mask retains its shape and form and that the seal around the users mouth and nose remains tight at all times. If this is not the case, the mask should be discarded of safely and in accordance with local regulations. Common sense should prevail and the masks should be kept hygienically in all cases to avoid any cross contamination when a mask is removed and reapplied. If in any doubt, the mask should be discarded and a new one used.
